Is The Universe Infinite

 Is The Universe Infinite

What is the meaning of infinity. Is the universe infinite or finite? If there is a boundary to the universe it must be finite. To our small world the vastness of the universe seems infinite, without an end in sight or in our imagination. We are stuck on a small planet in a vast galaxy surrounded by an infinite number of galaxies. In our speech and in our minds we talk about a size as infinite when we don’t know how big it is.

But, in reality if there is an answer about the size it must be finite. Imagine an ant crawling in your yard. To that ant it seems like an infinite distance to the edge of the ocean. Crossing the vast ocean is impossible for that ant, unless it happened to be on a ship. Going to the moon would be almost impossible unless it was on a spaceship. But surviving the trip without the proper gear is impossible. The moon is as far as man has travelled from our small planet.

Measuring Infinity

We only measure the size of something if we know it has a size. For instance, we have measured the size of the Earth. (It has a diameter of 12,742 Km and a mass of 5.972 x 10^24 Kg)

But since we are curious about our world we have even measured the size of the universe. If you believe the vast unknown universe is infinite you would tend to disbelieve these measurements.

They say the universe has a diameter at the present time of 93 billion light-years. Wow that is large, it would take light 93 billion years to travel across the universe. You could say that’s an infinity.

They have measured the mass of the universe as 10^53 Kg. I have no idea how that was weighed... But. imagine how many ants it would take to weigh that much?

The universe was born 13.8 billion years ago so it must have been a lot smaller than? That’s correct but the amount of energy remains the same. According to the law of conservation of energy, you can’t destroy energy but it can be transformed into matter.

Conclusion

So ladies and gentlemen, if the universe was born and has a lifetime to be. Than our infinite universe can’t be infinite after all, because we can measure its size.

The only thing that’s infinite is mankind’s stupidity and the size of the universe. But as Einstein said he’s not sure about the universe. Now we know the truth. The vast universe has a size and it’s not infinite.

Erik has a BSc degree and is a retired professional photographer who is now a published Author of many books. His passion is understanding how life and the universe works. He is currently blogging about the science of the Big Bang and the Law of Attraction and is helping his tribe with questions about the universe. His goal is to help find a theory of everything (TOE). In order to do that, he is trying to prove light has mass and that the fabric of spacetime is a false theory. We are welcoming questions and answers that you might have about the universe.
